What is Thanksgiving without Corn Bread?

Learn how to make cornbread for a delicious Thanksgiving treat. Or, make your favorite Thanksgiving cornbread recipe and add a unique twist like cheddar cheese to make cheesy cornbread or cream of corn to make a creamy corn bread.

Cheesy cornbread recipe:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 cups yellow cornmeal
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3 cups milk
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese or other cheese of your choice

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Cut in the shortening. In a separate bowl, mix the milk and eggs and stir the mixture into the rest of the ingredients. Pour the mixture into a greased 13 x 9 size pan, and sprinkle the cheese on top. Bake the cornbread for 25 minutes.

Make a cream cornbread using the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 15 ounces (1 can) of cream-style corn
  • 4 tbsp. melted butter

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and buttermilk, eggs, cream of corn and butter in another bowl. Stir the wet and dry ingredients together and pour the mixture into a 9 x 9 greased pan. Bake the cornbread for 25 minutes. Once cool, cut the cornbread into fun Thanksgiving shapes with cookie cutters or in traditional squares. Place the cornbread in a basket and serve it on the table at Thanksgiving, or walk around the room to offer pieces to guests.
