Great Ways to Recycle Paper Bags for Halloween

Want a unique, eco-friendly Halloween decorating idea? There are lots of great ways to recycle paper bags for Halloween and turn them into decorations,  trick-or-treat bags and party favors.

These paper bag Halloween crafts just take some creativity and imagination. Check out these five fabulous ways to recycle paper bags for Halloween:

  1. Jack-o-lantern luminaries: To make these festive outdoor lights, use scissors to cut jack-o-lantern faces on the front of each paper bag. Fill the bottom of each bag with sand (about 1-2 inches high) and place a tea candle in the center. These luminaries make lovely accents that will light the way for trick-or-treaters on Halloween night.
  2. Paper bag kids craft: This is a great craft idea for kids to create with friends before Halloween. First, gather paper bags and any craft supplies you have on hand such as paint, newspaper, markers, glitter and pipe cleaners. Next, paint the paper bags orange and stuff with newspaper. Tie the tops of the bags with green pipe cleaners and let the kids paint funny or scary faces onto them with the paint and markers. This is a creative project for the kids that makes colorful decorations. They can also experiment and make different Halloween characters, like white ghosts and black cats. You can even string these Halloween buddies together for cute and spooky touch!
  3. Halloween Puppets: Puppets are fun toys for kids to play with that will allow them to use their imaginations. Make a recyclable Halloween puppet with small paper bag (lunch bag size). Cut out witch’s hats, brooms and funny face shapes for the kids to glue to the bags to create adorable puppets. Have the kids write a story and act it out with the characters during a party or after school.
  4. Halloween Scrapbook: What better way to remember Halloween memories than by creating beautiful Halloween scrapbooks? Make the scrapbook completely out of paper bag scraps, ribbons and whatever else you can find. You can make one big scrapbook that documents Halloween memories over time or make individual scrapbooks for each year. This is a great, sustainable way to preserve memories for your children. A Halloween scrapbook makes a great gift idea too!
  5. Masks & Costumes: Paper bags can also be converted into whimsical kids costumes or masks. To do this, use large paper bags and cut them out into mask or costume shapes. Have a variety of paints and markers on hand so that the kids can use their imaginations to decorate. Some great paper bag costumes include Indian vests, superman capes, robot masks and ghosts.
These are just a few of the ways to green your Halloween. Crafts are especially terrific ways to reuse and recycle the items that you have around the house. Other items you can repurpose for Halloween include old sheets, buttons and cardboard boxes. Keep these items in mind when you craft costumes. Cardboard boxes in particular make for creative costume ideas, such as gifts, boxes of candy and boomboxes!
